Bird 1: Machine Crew Makes Major Progress in September
The Bird 1 crew spent September making steady progress as they continued carving new trail across steep hillsides. The month began with improvements to the access road, allowing the crew to successfully move the mini excavator deeper into the project area and reach the active work zone more efficiently.

Once construction resumed on the trail itself, the crew focused on creating deep sidehill cuts as they advanced toward the first planned switchback. The mini excavator has proven invaluable in this terrain, where building trail with hand tools alone would be an incredibly slow and demanding task. By carefully shaping the hillside and removing large amounts of material, the machine has allowed the crew to move efficiently while maintaining the high standards required for sustainable trail construction.

Although conditions were generally favorable, the crew still encountered plenty of obstacles. Large root systems, steep slopes, and rain delays all created challenges throughout the month. Near the end of September, the crew reached a difficult section of bluff rock that required route adjustments and additional hand work before construction could continue. After navigating around the obstacle, the crew was able to get back on course and continue advancing the trail corridor.

By the end of the month, the Bird 1 crew had completed 775 feet of new trail. Considering the steep side slopes and challenging terrain, that progress represents a significant step forward for the project. With each passing week, the route is taking shape and bringing another section of the Cumberland Trail closer to completion. The steady progress made this month demonstrates how skilled operators and specialized equipment can successfully tackle rugged terrain while creating a trail that will serve hikers for years to come.
