Welcome to the Team, Johnathan Orban
If you’ve spent any time on the Cumberland Trail, you’ve experienced the hard work that goes into building and maintaining every mile. Behind each step is a dedicated crew working to create a lasting trail experience for everyone who visits.
We’re excited to introduce one of the newest members of the Cumberland Trail Conservancy Trail Crew, Johnathan “Jay” Orban.

A Crossville native, Jay joined the Conservancy because of his love for hiking and the opportunity to work outdoors. Now, instead of simply exploring trails, he’s helping build and care for them.
“I love hiking and wanted to work outdoors,” Jay said.
As a member of the Trail Crew, Jay is looking forward to learning more about trail construction techniques and gaining a deeper understanding of the Cumberland Trail itself. From shaping tread to improving drainage and creating sustainable routes, every day offers a chance to develop new skills while helping connect people to the outdoors.
When he’s not working on the trail, Jay enjoys spending time outside through rock climbing, camping, hiking, and kayaking. He’s also currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, bringing an additional passion for conservation and stewardship to his work.
His favorite outdoor activity? Camping.
Jay has already jumped into crew life and appreciates the supportive environment he’s found with his teammates.
“Everyone is super nice and very supportive while teaching me what to do,” he shared. “I am happy to be here.”
We’re excited to have Jay on the team and look forward to seeing the impact he’ll make on the Cumberland Trail in the months and years ahead.
If you see Jay working out on the trail, be sure to give him a wave and thank him for helping build and maintain Tennessee’s long-distance hiking trail.
